Semiotics by Joe Bikuta
Semiotics is the study of signs. It is used to describe how meaning is constructed through language and codes. The study of signs and symbols is a way of discussing literal and potential meanings off the images we see on the screen. In the image above, these are examples of semiotics commonly seen within horror films. For Example, The final girl adopts masculine traits and uses a phallic weapon (GUN) to attack the antagonist in slasher films.

Representation: Final girl by levi bent
the use of the representation of a final girl allows the character to adopt masculine features, this could also be seen as a reversal role as it is the female character saving the other characters or fighting for survival.
Feminism: Male Gaze (Mulvey) by levi bent
the use of the male gaze from the representation theorist laura mulvey is visceral pleasure from a male perspective that involves sexualising a females character. We used an example from the horror film 'cabin in the woods'.

analysis of cabin in the woods by levi bent
Using your notes from class on sub-genre and Horror conventions, write a 300 word summary of HOW the film make interesting use of the conventions of Horror and Sub-genres you have studied.
Cabin in The Woods utilizes different sub-genres throughout the film that highlight the categories in the horror genre. This Horror film begins with the odd sense of the film actually not fitting the right requirements to see it as a horror film as lighting, sound, camera, editing and mis-en-scene all play an essential part of diverting from its true nature. Other horror films begin with dark and gloomy lighting, plus the addition and sound creating the tension it would seem ideal. Furthermore the 5 fictional characters help portray certain traits such as the dumb blonde, the smart one, the virgin girl, the athlete and the fool. In film as custom the slutty girl dies first with her sins put to sleep, with the other characters due to die except from the virgin girl it seemed the film was accurate with their decisions. The fact that these were young characters it corresponded with the theme of teen punishment being introduced. Symbolic items or props used in the film included the interesting choice of each character choosing their own fate which was appealing as it created a different movement and gateway to introduce the different sub-genres such as werewolf, vampire, monster, splatter and slasher. Finally I also noticed how subvert roles were used as the virgin girl was attacking others with knives which we would expect a man to do. This also diminishes the damsel in distress point as this is not evident in the film.
